IBM to provide tolling on Qld roads - Friday, March 21, 2008

IBM has been awarded a contract to build an automated tolling system for use across the toll roads of South-East Queensland. The contract, awarded by Queensland Motorways and involving the supply of consulting services, IT infrastructure, and software, is expected to be worth a total of $A22 million over 18 months.

Elders gets pumping with IBM iron - Friday, March 07, 2008

Elders gets pumping with IBM iron Elders has installed a monster IBM System i platform at its facility in Adelaide. Working with Hyro, Elders has put in a Model 570 with 16 processors (12 activated), 384G-bytes of RAM, and about 30T-bytes of disk storage. The system, which supports more than 3000 users, was ordered in December and released to production last month. "Our advice is that this is the largest system of its type ever delivered in Australia, and perhaps ever in the Southern Hemisphere," claimed Bill Bradshaw, Hyro's South Australian branch manager.

IBM veteran Elix hangs up his hat - Friday, February 29, 2008

Doug Elix has retired from IBM, ending a term of duty spanning almost 40 years. After joining the company in 1969 Elix rose through the ranks of the Australian operation to CEO when he replaced Brian Finn in 1994. In 1996 he transferred to the US, and his career really appeared to blossom. In 1998 Elix was appointed president and CEO of IBM subsidiary Integrated Systems Solutions, and later that year he was made general manager of IBM Global Services, Americas. For the past four years he has been senior vice president and group executive for IBM's worldwide sales and distribution operations. Elix will be replaced by Frank Kern, an American who spent some time in Australia as CEO of IBM Global Services Australia and was most recently general manager of IBM Asia/Pacific.

IBM gets amongst the contracts - Friday, February 01, 2008

IBM has swept into 2008 buoyed by a number of solid contracts — two with big banks and one with a state government. The deals included:

  • A three-year outsourcing agreement to take over the National Australia Bank's desktop and service desk IT infrastructure, help desk, and desktop support for 28,000 NAB users around Australia;
  • Inclusion on the Commonwealth Bank of Australia's panel of suppliers of application and management services; and
  • A four-year contract to help the Queensland Government implement business solutions as part of its shared service initiative. IBM's consultants will provide application development and testing, training, and change-management services.
